Course Concept
Taiji
Chuan (Tai Chi) is an ancient Eastern form of exercises, characterized by slow
reversing movements. There is strong research evidence validating Taiji as a
safe form of exercise having potential for health promotion and
rehabilitation. The public is embracing
Taiji in increasing numbers. There is evidence of economic feasibility for
continuous programming and third-party payers are reimbursing for Taiji
Instruction. As a result, there is a growing unmet demand for competent Tai Chi
instructors to provide safe and effective health and wellness Taiji Programs to
individuals with mild exercise tolerance limitations or medically stable
movement impairments. The challenge of providing Taiji health and wellness
promoting exercise programs for such individuals is two-fold: (a) program
instructors must be competent administering and conducting safe exercise programming
for potentially vulnerable clinical populations, and therefore should have
knowledge of pathophysiology, exercise precautions,
and (b) program instructors must have basic level skill in performance and
teaching of Taiji. This course prepares program instructors to design and
conduct basic-level programming.

The purpose of the full
(four module) certification course is to prepare qualified health
professionals and exercise specialists, those who already have skill in
health promotion client education and exercise management, to competently
provide basic-level Taiji Health Promotion. There is emphasis on residential (e.g.
multi-level) facilities, community settings (e.g. Senior Community Centers),
and community-dwelling special needs populations (e.g. Parkinson’s support
groups, MS support groups).
Certification
requires 64 contact hours and demonstration of motor and instructional
proficiency. The training occurs as four, 16-hour practical modules with the
expectation that candidates will practice regularly to improve performance
skills and complete field work observations or supervised teaching prior to
enrolling in successive course modules. Teaching practice and video assessment
of micro-teaching demonstrations occur in Modules III and IV. Participants who
successfully complete the full course will receive verification of contact
hours and a certificate of achievement. CEU’s are
awarded for course participation.
